About This Spot

Stepping into Bakawarai Junsui is like slipping into a warm embrace on a lively evening in Kichijoji. The gentle hum of conversations and soft clinks of glasses shape an inviting atmosphere where time slows just enough for genuine connections to take root. This izakaya pulses with a relaxed yet spirited rhythm—the kind that encourages laughter around shared plates and hearty toasts among friends and strangers alike.

The space feels both intimate and communal, suffused with a welcoming energy that flows from the attentive staff and extends seamlessly to the customers who frequently engage in easy, good-natured exchanges. Whether you find yourself tucked away at the counter or settled at a cozy corner table, the setting invites you to settle in, unwind, and savor these human moments.

As the evening unfolds, the kitchen sends out an array of thoughtfully prepared plates that reflect the heart of Japanese casual dining. Imagine tender wagyu steaks that melt effortlessly on the tongue, vibrant sashimi arranged with a painter’s care, and comforting dishes that carry the simple, satisfying flavors of home. Each bite feels like an invitation—to explore the harmony of flavors, to pause between sips of sake, or to dive into conversation with newfound friends.

Bakawarai Junsui isn’t just about the food; it’s about the stories shared over a carefully poured drink, the spontaneous smiles exchanged, and the gentle warmth that lingers long after the meal ends. Here, hospitality isn’t scripted—it’s felt in every gesture, every quick seating conjured to welcome newcomers, and every moment when the outside world fades into the comforting glow of this local gem.

It's one of my favorite places to be in the world, bar none. Been there multiple times over multiple visits to Japan and have always had an absolutely amazing time. Staff are super friendly and accommodating, other patrons are always willing to have a conversation, and the food and drinks are incredible as well. I heartily recommend asking for their recommendations and just going with it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Had an amazing time, food, vibe, staff and locals were great fun chatting with even my minimal japanese. Will come back next trip for sure but with better Japanese thank you for the service.

This is the next happiest place besides Disneyland. When you come here, be prepared to laugh a lot and go home with a smile. The staff here are incredibly warm and funny. My 5 year old daughter and I had an incredible time talking, laughing with the staff and the customers next to us. The sakes here are all priced at the same price so it was really easy to order (too much). I enjoyed the sashimi platter with the smoked hamachi which was the first time I have seen in an izakaya. The only complaint was I found some of the dishes a little salty like the stir fried ramen and the chicken skewers. The prices here are all reasonable and I’d come back here frequently if I stay in the neighbourhood.

Ate all the food that was recommended and it was all delicious. The ichigo highball and matcha shochu were also tasty! The service is the best part. Everyone, staff and locals, is friendly. We didn't have a reservation and the seating was full, but they whipped out a corner table to seat us quickly. When there was space we got to sit at the counter and it was amazing. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great time with good vibes.

What can I say about this place. It feels like eating at a bbq in your back yard with all your best friends. Atmosphere is top notch and always fun. Make sure you ask to do the challenge to flip your own pork egg roll for some extra fun and great for pictures
